Garage Door Layers and Insulation

1 Layer ($)

In the one layer construction, what you see on the outside is what you get. It is the least expensive but also the least durable. There is no insulation, thus no r-value, with these doors. One layer garage doors are more prone to dents and damage because there is no back support.

2 layer ($$)

A two layer door has insulation that is protected by a vinyl sheet layer. It is a step up from the one layer but still not as durable as the three layer. The insulation does however help prevent dents. Two layer garage doors typically come in a polystyrene insulation best described as foam.

3 layer ($$$)

Three layer doors consist of the outside layer, one of two types of insulation, and the inside steel layer. The inside steel layer helps stabilize and add durability. Insulation is either polystyrene (lesser value of the two) or polyurethane (the better insulation) Polyurethane insulation is heavier.

What's the difference between Polyurethane and Polystyrene insulation itself? Polystyrene is installed in sheets sandwiched between the outside layers.. Polyurethane is bonded to the inside layers of the sheets. 

Which one is for me? That depends on how you use your garage. If you have a climate control space and you want to keep the temperature from fluctuating, then the polyurethane door is the right one for you. If you have kids or grandkids that play ball by the garage door then polyurethane would help reduce the dents, Moreover, if you have a living space over the garage, the higher density polyurethane will not only keep the room warmer but will reduce the noise you hear from the moving garage door below you. On the flip side  if you are going to manually operate the door then you would go with the lighter of the two so polystyrene would be your choice. If you are in a flood zone and are prone to flooding waterproof polystyrene is what we would recommend.
